What is a Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organisation, product, event, or activity. It is usually measured in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
As part of Sport England’s Every Move strategy, they have devised a beginners guide to carbon footprinting in grassroots sport.
Read the guideUnderstanding where to start with calculating the carbon emissions of your organisation can be a challenge, but there are plenty of resources available to help break it down.
You are likely to have three key emissions areas; energy, travel and purchasing.
- Energy: how much electricity and gas to you use each year? This data can be found on utility bills. Do you own generators? If you down any vehicles, what type of fuel do they run on?
- Travel: How do the majority of staff, participants, volunteers, fans or spectators travel to and from your venue? Do you hire buses to transport participants to events or competitions? Researching providers whose vehicles run on electricity rather than fuel is a greener alternative.
- Purchasing: do you research suppliers that have recognised sustainability credentials, or offer products that have been recycled through donation schemes?
