The School Games is a nationwide initiative that puts physical activity at the heart of education, with the clear aim of making a meaningful difference to children and young people.
Aligned with Sport England’s Uniting the Movement strategy, the programme reacts to local needs to ensure it is inclusive and engaging. Its mission is to provide positive, enjoyable experiences of physical activity that support young people’s physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, while helping them achieve their best and develop a lifelong love of being active.
Delivered locally across the Rise region through a network of School Games Organisers, the School Games offers a year-round programme of events, festivals and competitions for schools. Funded by Sport England and supported by the Youth Sport Trust, the programme is open to schools within the region and adapts to reflect local needs.
The School Games places an emphasis on inclusion, with support for less active children and young people, those who may not traditionally represent their school, and pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Activities are shaped by the wants and needs of children and young people, with youth voice central to the programme. Through co-design and co-delivery, young people actively influence what we offer, how it is delivered and how it evolves. Engagement is not limited to sports; with activities driven by young people’s interests and preferences, ensuring opportunities are inclusive and motivating.
The School Games works to build confidence, resilience and essential life skills. It promotes core values such as teamwork, respect, determination and self-belief, while offering meaningful opportunities through a broad range of activities and leadership opportunities. Through removing barriers to participation and creating supportive environments, The School Games inspires children and young people to be active and lays the foundations for healthy, active lives.
