Play streets (or ‘playing out’ sessions) are neighbour-led short road closures, creating a safe space for children to play freely together on their doorstep.
They transform neighbourhood streets into pop-up community hubs for socialising, play, and physical activity.
Play streets typically allow children to play freely. In practice, this means children cycle, scoot, skate, chalk, skip, hopscotch, kick a ball around and make up games.
We collaborate with our partners, such as North Tyneside Council, to promote Play Streets – and we try to co-ordinate Play Streets across the region.
We want more Play Streets across the region for the benefit of communities.
Play Streets:
- Provide an opportunity to encourage and enable active travel. Reducing car use, making streets safer and increasing walking and cycling.
- Give children space and freedom to get exercise outdoors, play freely, gain independence and skills, and make friends close to home.
- Increase connections, friendship and trust between neighbours of all ages and backgrounds.
